amazing! any idea where I can get more of these photos?

I ride my bike on this old site often. Its part of the Hollow Oak Trust trail system. I always wonder what was there and how it was laid out. And.....if there is anything buried there...

There were originally 12 Nike Ajax sites around Pittsburgh. When the transition was made to Nike Hercules, there were only 6. In the case of both systems, they were manned by both active Army and Pa National Guard units. In 1971, the 6 sites were reduced to 4 - 2 Active Army and 2 NG. All had the same equipment. The headquarters for the defense of Pittsburgh was in Oakdale and was manned by Active Army, not the Air Force. All were deactivated in 1974. I know this since I was stationed with the 23rd NORAD region in Duluth, MN from 1969-71 and upon return from Viet Nam 71-72, joined the NG in 72 and served in the 2nd Bn, 176th Air Defense Artillery which manned the sites in PI-03 and PI-71.

My Father worked at the Nike Shop on Neville Island his whole career. I spent a lot of time there and we also visited some of the missile sites. Like so many others we rode dirt bikes and such at the Avonworth site after it closed. I remember watching the GI's training guard dogs there too. Thanks for the memories!

Where Mr. Rogers grew up though by this time his neighborhood show was in full swing.

This is fascinating to see. I grew up and currently reside in Moon Twp. My friends and I used to play at this abandoned site. Trello's pond was nearby as we used to fish and walk through the site to nearby woods. We even rode dirt bikes to the Londonbury trails which were in the area. I was always interested in Cold War history and wondered what this site actually looked like. The NIKE system was a part of that history right here in Moon. Could this site be restored or dedicated as historical ? Could the guys who served there ever be recognized ?

You're welcome..I'll tell dad that someone who worked at a NIKE site made a comment on this video, he will like that :) Yes..my father told me that there were two sections to the base..the launch site and the radar and control section. My father said their control center was about 3 miles away on a hill top. When he was stationed in Cleveland, the radar unit would overheat and shut down and actually caught fire 3 times lol. Thanks for posting your father's photos. I was at a Nike site near Washington, DC 1956 to 1957. Looking back- I'm sorry I took so little interest in the entire scene. I was in the Control section and saw little of what went on in the Launcher section. RUclips is some help with this.
